- DC CORRESPONDENT

M. Savitha, a secondyear post-graduate student of Osmania Medical College, committed suicide at her home in Adilabad, injecting herself with vecuronium, an anaesthetic that is commonly used as a muscle relaxant.

According to her colleagues at Osmania General Hospital, Savitha’s family had selected a groom for her, but she was unhappy with the alliance. Having been unable to convince her parents against the marriage, she had decided to end her life.

Savitha M, a second year postgraduate student of Osmania Medical College, committed suicide at her home in Adilabad by injecting vecuronium which is an anesthesia injection used for muscle relaxation. She died on the spot.

Savitha had visited her family during the weekend holidays. She could not convince her parents about her impending marriage.

Her colleagues at Osmania General Hospital said, “The family had selected a groom but she was not happy with the alliance and didn't want to get married. She took this extreme step.”

Junior doctors said that this is the second incident. In 2016, another medical student committed suicide in Uppal against the forced marriage.

SAVITHA’S COLLEAGUES at Osmania General Hospital said that her family had selected a groom but she was not happy with the alliance and didn't want to get married. She took this extreme step.

Dr G Srinivas, senior resident doctor, said, “Doctors have to be emotionally strong to handle their personal crisis. They are handling problems of many patients on a daily basis. However, when it comes to their own problems, they fail. This is painful.”

Counselling is conducted in the medical colleges where the students are given an opportunity to talk about their personal problems privately to counsellors.

But few students avail this facility, noted senior members in the college.
