FAMILIES OF DeMo VICTIMS MOVE NHRC FOR COMPENSATION

A petition has been submitted to the National Human Rights Commission requesting compensation for the lives lost during demonetisation.

Many families in Telangana are still awaiting compensation for the lives of their loved ones. A 44-year-old woman resident of Mahbubabad committed suicide after realising that her savings had been rendered worthless overnight. Her family members say that they are yet to receive compensation from the government.

Police officials in Vizag say that no compensation has been given to the parents of Komali either. The eighteen-month-old baby was refused admission by hospitals because her parents were unable to arrange new currency notes. She died as a result of not receiving prompt medical treatment.

Over 12 bank employees in TS died while on duty, during the period of demonetisation, due to hypertension and heart attacks. Many of them were stressed because of having to work round-the-clock with no holidays for the exchange of currency notes.

M.S. Kumar, the general secretary of the Federation of Bank Employees, says that bank unions have submitted many representations seeking compensation for the families of bank employees who died on duty and also for the families of customers, many of whom were elderly persons, who died while waiting in long queues for the exchange of notes.
