Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Hyderabad to inaugurate the first phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail, a fire drill and a mock rescue operation were conducted at Miyapur and Kukatpally stations on Saturday.

The Prime Minister, along with Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao, will take a ride on the Metro from Miyapur to Kukatpally on November 28. Fire safety measures have been scrutinised by the fire safety department. A thorough inspection of the station, Metro Rail and the rescue equipment was done.

Using the Bronto Sky Lift’s hydraulic platform, two persons were rescued from the top floor as part of the drill. This equipment can reach up to a height of 54 metres. Rescue tools and water jets were inspected at the two stations.

Fire services department’s additional director C. Lakshmi Prasad said, “Telangana state disaster response and fire service department is equipped to tackle any kind of attack. We have deployed around 261 fire fighters and 31 vehicles in various locations to take care of fire safety and rescue operations.”

A Hazmat (hazardous material) vehicle drill took place at Miyapur station. A special purpose vehicle with rescue equipment to tackle any nuclear, biological or chemical attack is available in Hyderabad.

“After Delhi only Hyderabad has such equipment in the country,” said Mr Prasad.
