CRASH DIETS MAY NOT HELP IN WEIGHT LOSS

- KANIZA GARARI | DC HYDERABAD, MARCH 7

Crash diets, Mediterranean diets, low carb or protein diets do not help in long term weight loss, according to an analysis of 400 studies done by Endocrine Society. The study has found that apart from diets, it is important to understand the individual genetics and also how well they can adhere to a particular regime.

The study was carried out due to the increasing obesity cases. It is estimated that more than 1.9 billion adults are obese or overweight. Due to increasing complications of obesity, like Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, sleep apnea and kidney diseases, it has been stated that diets are not helping to achieve longterm results.

Dr Pradeep Shinde, senior gastroenterologist explained that there are people who go for diets and medications but so far in extreme obese cases, surgical procedures have proved the right way to treat obesity.

“There is further research on the role of genetics and also the manner in which food is absorbed by the digestive system. These will hold the key to understand obesity better,” he said.

The researchers are also looking at dietary supplements and diabetes’ medicines to understand if it can help control weight loss without side effects.

Experts state that they need to look at long-term impact, including food habits, activity and also genetic make-up to allow a person to deal with obesity or act early while they put on weight.
