DESAM’S DECISION

-

AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s decision to pull out his party from the Modi government should serve as a warning bell to the BJP (Modi’s call fails to pacify Naidu, March 9). Mr Modi must rethink about the general election. Since the TD left the NDA government, he may get good public support in the coming election. Tauseef Alam

The resignation of BJP ministers in AP and TD ministers in the Union Cabinet will divert and dilute the agitation for Special Category Status in AP. To prove his sincerity, Mr Naidu must come out of the NDA and go for the fresh elections without having any alliance with the BJP. Though the two BJP ministers left the AP Cabinet, the TD still enjoys the power which it had got on the back of the BJP’s vote share. J. Vijaykumar Secunderabad

While political realignment is quite obvious ahead of any election, the public recrimination between the BJP and the TD is over a promise to grant special category status made to the people of AP by two national parties on the floor of Parliament. While it seems as if Amit Shah-led BJP doesn’t need the TD, the reality is different. Without the Telugu Desam, the BJP would not have majority in the Rajya Sabha. P. Arihanth Secunderabad

It was the Congress which promised SCS in 2014 to cool the tempers of Andhraites and win the election. Generally, special status is provided to states that have poor economies, mountainous, population-less terrain, and a large tribal population. Since there are no railway and highways could be built in these states, factories could not be set up. So the Centre help such states. But AP has no such issues. Ravi Sharma Hyderabad
