Convict climbs pole, causes ruckus in jail over ‘demands’

In a serious lapse of security, a life-term convict climbed an electric pole and threatened to commit suicide in Cherlapall­y Central Prison on Monday.

The convict, K. Pasha, 38, who was working at a petrol pump near Cherlapall­y prison in the morning, ran up to the electric pole and climbed up.

Police said Pasha wanted sub-inspector Nagaraju of Shankerpal­ly, who had booked a case against him, to be suspended. “He alleged the subinspect­or had an affair with his wife, whom he had murdered and whose conviction brought him to jail in 2012,” prison superinten­dent M. R. Bhasker said.

The accused wedded Hymavathi, 26, in a love marriage in 2010. After a while, Dandu's mother began to chide him over dowry saying that if he had married a girl from their caste he would have got `15-20 lakh in dowry. From then onwards, the accused and his family started harassing Hymavathi, said LB Nagar DCP M Venkateshw­ar Rao said.

"One day the accused asked his wife for money, which she refused to give. Fed up, she tried committing suicide. The accused egged her on, and in fact killed her by strangulat­ing her," DCP Rao said.

Police registered a case on the basis of a complaint filed by K. Chandraiah, the father of the deceased. Accused Dandu was to be produced in court.
