RANKING MUST TO HELP VARSITIES GROW

- DC CORRESPONDENT HYDERABAD, JUNE 7

It has become important for an institute to secure a world ranking to develop the capacity to compete in the global education marketplace.

Significant financial resources are essential to pay salaries required to attract and retain leading scholars and to build the facilities needed to secure world ranks. According to experts, providing an intimate and intensive teaching environment for students, where they can expect to engage with leading academic staff, can help.

NIT-Warangal director Prof. N.V. Ramana Rao said, “Top quality universities come in many shapes and sizes, and there is no single model of excellence. The world university rankings are carefully designed to capture excellence in teaching and research against a university’s own mission and its own unique profile.”

He said the new information, revealed for the first time from the rankings database, provides clear pointers for any academic leader or any government serious about building world-class universities.

He said the first need was for “serious money”. “Significant financial resources are essential to pay salaries required to attract and retain the leading scholars and to build the facilities needed. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, a world-class university must be genuinely international. It must be a magnet for the most talented staff and students,” Prof. Ramana said.

“It must bring people together from different cultures and backgrounds to tackle shared global challenges. It must work and think across national borders,” he said.
