Model-turned-godman Bhayyuji Maharaj, who had many veteran political leaders and Bollywood actors as his followers, on Tuesday allegedly shot himself dead in the study room of his daughter at his residence, ‘Silver Spring’, a famous address in Indore.

The self-styled spiritual leader shot himself in his right temple from a licenced pistol at around 12.15 pm. He was rushed to the Bombay Hospital in Indore where doctors declared him dead.

“His family rushed to the room where he confined himself after hearing gunshot. The room was closed from inside. The family members broke open the doors to find him in a pool of blood. They then rushed him to the hospital,” deputy inspector general police Hari Narayan Mishra said.

KNOWN ‘GRIHASTA Sant’ for leading a family life despite being a spiritual leader. He married Dr Ayushi Sharma last year, a year after announcing his intention to take 'sanyas' from public life. His first wife Madhavi died in 2015.

ONE OF the five 'saints' to whom the Shivraj Singh government of Madhya Pradesh had granted Minister of State rank in April. However, he had refused to accept it, saying "a post holds no importance for a saint".
