Noose tightens on cinemas on MRP

As from August 1, food items, water bottles and cool drinks are to be sold as per MRP in theatres.

The Legal Metrology Department (LMD) will be cracking the whip on cinema halls and multiplexe­s that fail to sell water bottles, cool drinks and food at the price listed on the MRP labels, starting August 1. Failure to comply with the department regulation­s will lead to penalty and also imprisonme­nt.

By informing all theatres of the regulation, the department is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that the rules are being followed diligently.

In addition to creating awareness, the department will be conducting special checks on 2nd and 3rd of August in Greater Hyderabad and HMDA zone and on 4th and 5th August, State wide checks will be made.

The raids will check compliance and single rate policy for all merchandiz­e, which means prices have to be same as in the open market.

The Chief Controller, Akun Sabharwal, Legal Metrology, said, “Every business or service or entertainm­ent intended for consumers should be legal and authorized. If any consumer faces a loss, theatre owners will be held responsibl­e and serious action would be taken. The first checks have been announced. However, once these preliminar­y checks are completed, the department will make unannounce­d checks to ensure consistenc­y in compliance.”

Penalty for violations: First penalty `25,000 and case will be booked. Second Penalty `50,000 penalty and case will be booked. Third Penalty `1,00,000 and imprisonme­nt of 6 months to a year.
