Biometrics used in universities too

In a recent meet with fourteen state university vicechancellors, governor E.S.L. Narasimhan asked them to implement biometric attendance system in a full-fledged manner. The process of setting up biometric systems in universities is speeding up since then.

Most of the technical colleges and universities already had biometric systems in place for more than a year for recording the attendance of graduate and post graduate students along with teachers and other staff, said an education expert and an engineering college Professor, Mr Gaddam Venkat. He added that, however, universities lacked biometrics.

Though other state universities like Telangana University and Osmania University have biometric attendance system, it is not hundred percent. Efforts are being put in by the varsity administration to complete the process. Prof. K. Shiva Shankar, Telangana University Registrar, said “Sixty per cent of the affiliated colleges have biometric system for teachers and other administrative staff. We have it for II-year students and will introduce it for the freshers this year. The rest will be finished soon.”

Osmania University is also heading forward, completing eighty per cent of the installation. It was first introduced for administrative staff and then spread out to other departments.
