Four members of a family of 10 from Dhoolpet of Hyderabad died when their hired SUV rammed into a truck in an attempt to overtake another truck on national highway 65 near Sadasivpet of Medak.

Two of the four were children and died on the spot. Their allegedly drunk driver caused the accident.

The family had gone to Wadi in Karnataka to attend the engagement ceremony of a relative and headed back late Thursday night.

The deceased were identified as Shiva, 28, Sruthi, 17, Varun, 9, and Nagendar, 45.

The condition of four of the other six people who were injured in the accident was said to be critical.

According to sources, the victims told the police that the driver Ravi had consumed alcohol at a roadside dhaba near Zaheerabad.

As many as 30 persons from Dhoolpet and SR Nagar of Hyderabad travelled to Wadi in Gulbarga district of Karnataka to attend the ceremony, said police inspector of Sadashivpet K. Surender Reddy.

“The families were heading back home after the ceremony in four cars. They all stopped for dinner in the night on the Karnataka border near Zaheerabad. When they reached PSML Colony in Sadashivpet circle, the driver Ravi tried to overtake a truck and while doing so, crashed into the truck from the left,” the inspector said.

“While three persons died on the spot, Sruthi succumbed to her injuries at a nearby hospital,” the inspector said.

He said that the driver was overspeeding and was allegedly in an inebriated condition.

After the accident, Ravi immediately fled the spot.
