TWO KINDS of HPV vaccine were approved for use in India in 2008. CERVARIX IS a bivalent vaccine that protects against infection of two HPV strains, type 16 and type 18.

THE OTHER vaccine is Gardasil which protects against type 6 and 11 strain of the virus. These two types are found to cause genital warts apart from the additional risk factors for cervical cancer.

THESE TWO viruses cause 80 per cent of cervical cancers and are found to be the most aggressive.

BOTH THESE vaccines are available in the market.
