Public no to vending zones at Madhapur

■ People against letting out space to vendors in their vicinity

The first vending zone has become operational, on the 100 Feet Road in Madhapur, but is drawing public resistance. People have been coming up with representations against such zones in the Serilingampally GHMC zone.

Vending zones have been identified in Serilingampally Circle near DLF Road, Shilparamam, Hitex Road and the one at Madhapur which has become operational.

While the zones are being set up in response to the demand to organise vending and clear the pavements and roads, it has become a doubleedged sword.

People need vendors so that they can make small purchases, but they do not want the stalls to be located in their vicinity.

This has become a problem for the GHMC because if the vendors are shifted to distant locations with few customers they will return to the old spots.

The GHMC and traffic police are trying ensure that the vendors are not displaced but that they do not encroach on the road and the footpath.

GHMC additional commissioner Harichandana Dasari said, “There is a lot of resistance for having street vending zones. A lot of people don’t want to give vendors space, even though they encourage them by making purchases.”

Serilingampally civic body officials are hunting for locations for green zones, where ending is allowed at all times ,and amber zones, where vending is restricted.
