BIRTH OF A NEW WORLD
FIRST POPULARISED by Yale computer scientist David Gelernter, the augmented reality — simply called the mirror world — will reflect not just what something looks like but its context, meaning, and function. One will be able to interact with it, manipulate it, and experience it like one does in the real world.
THE MIRROR World’s curious dual nature, melding the real and the virtual, will enable now unthinkable games and entertainment. Pokémon Go gives just a hint of this platform’s unlimited potential.
FOR THE mirror world to come fully online, one needs to build a 3D model of physical reality, where we could incorporate the real and virtual.
THE mirror world, however, will only become a reality, if cheap, always-on wearable glasses, are readily available.
HOLOLENS AR devices, which Microsoft has been producing since 2016, is a seethrough visor mounted to a head strap. Once it boots up, the HoloLens maps the room. One can then use their hands to maneuver menus floating in front of them, choosing which apps or experiences to load.
