Docs strike for better security

- DC CORRESPONDENT

The angry relatives started manhandling the CMO, abused him, and also used abusive language on the duty hospital staff, hampered the duties of emergency staff and disturbed the patients

— Junior doctors held a protest in Nims hospital against the alleged attack on the casualty medical officer, Dr Anvesh, who was on duty.

They complained that the security was not sufficient for them on the hospital premises. They added that recently they had given a representation to deploy the special protection force in the hospital.

“There are only 60 security personnel in the hospital. However the required personnel were around 260 members,” the representation said.

Convenor of the resident doctor association Nims hospital, Dr G Srinivas, said, “Fifteen members attacked the casualty duty doctor claiming that the doctors did not treat the victim who was rushed to the hospital with a head injury. The patient reached the hospital at an unconscious stage. After giving primary treatment, when he recovered consciousness, he was referred to the neurology department and meanwhile sent for a CT scan.”

He further alleged that “All the assailants were in an inebriated condition and claiming that they were friends of a current cabinet minister’s son and attacked the duty doctor. This is the fifth incident of attack on doctors in Nims hospital. Recently, we have given a representation to the health minister about the same. We have demanded a special protection force and armed force at the emergency department for the security of duty doctors. He assured that he would provide security.”

The convenor said that while a total of 260 security personnel were required for Nims hospital round the clock, there were only 60 security personnel which was less than one fourth the total requirement. “Most of them are unfit for security duties,” the doctor told this newspaper.

Indian Medical Association (IMA) also held a protest against the high handed behavior against the staff and medical professionals in Nims.
