Karimnagar MP files complaint with Lok Sabha Speaker
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday registered a case against the Telangana state government chief secretary, home secretary, director general of police, and the commissioner of Ramagundam police for the alleged attack on Bharatiya Janata Party Karimnagar MP, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, and issued notices to them.
Mr Kumar moved a privilege motion regarding the alleged attack after meeting with Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, in New Delhi. He was accompanied by BJP parliamentary secretary, Kamarasu Balasubramnayam.
Kumar had alleged that he had been assaulted by police officials when he was taking part in the funeral procession of RTC driver, N. Babu, of Karimnagar bus depot-II on November 1. The driver died of cardiac arrest the previous day, apparently under stress due to unpaid bills and financial security against the backdrop of the RTC strike.
The police tried to stop them and an argument ensued. At that time, Mr Kumar alleged, some police officials held him by his shirt collar, manhandled and assaulted him.
Kumar also briefed Speaker, Om Birla, about the attack on him and BHP activists and submitted some photographs, videos and paper clippings of the incident.
He also informed the Speaker that a case was registered by NHRC on the issue.
Birla, after examining the evidence, ordered the chairman of the privileges committee, Sushil Kumar Singh, to institute an inquiry.
Birla also ordered the committee to give a report at the earliest after completing the inquiry and assured the MP that action would be taken against the police officials who allegedly attacked him.
