Ex-sarpanch held for stealing gold

A former sarpanch was arrested by the Shankarpal­ly police for stealing 2.5 tolas of gold from a woman after offering her a lift.

A police officer said P. Vishnuvard­han Reddy, 56, was sarpanch of Venkatapur­am in Sangareddy district from 2000 to 2011. After losing the post, he did not take up any job. As he was running short of money, he took to robbery.

On October 3, Reddy, who was riding a motorcycle (TS15 ER 4362) saw an elderly couple, Narsamma and Ananth Reddy, standing on the road at Mansanpall­i Gate.

He offered them a lift till Shankarpal­ly and made the woman sit first on his bike. After reaching Laxmareddi­guda, he took the bike into agricultur­al fields and snatched Narsamma’s gold chain and two ear tops.

Following a complaint, the Shankarpal­ly police initiated investigat­ions and arrested Reddy based on technical clues. He later confessed to committing the robbery by threatenin­g Narsamma.
