Godavari water reaches MMD
After what appeared to be an inordinate delay, the Mid Manair Dam (MMD) finally received Godavari water under the prestigious Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project.
Irrigation department officials on Tuesday released Godavari water to MMD by lifting water from four heavy duty motor pumps sets at the Gayatri pump house established in Lakshmipur village of Ramadugu mandal in Karimnagar district.
This is a significant development considering that on the completion of stage-I and stageII works, officials supplied water to MMD from Yellampalli reservoir in September. When the volume of water at the dam reached 15 tmc ft, against to its full capacity of 25.873 tmc ft, leakages were noticed from the left side of the MMD bund. As an immediate measure, officials released the water downstream.
Stage-II of KLIS project includes 6, 7 and 8 packages along with two tunnels of 25 km length, seven massive ‘Bahubali’ motor pump sets, an underground surge-pool and electric sub-station.
At this stage, the water that is lifted from 518 metres at the bed level of Godavari from Medigadda barrage is sent to MMD and then to the LMD from Yellamapalli through flood canal.
The officials in August and September conducted wet runs by lifting the water from the pump houses under stage-II. When they noticed some leakages at various stages, they plugged the leaks and conducted another wet run which was successful.
Later, when they supplied Godavari water to MMD, the officials noticed leakage in the left side of the bund at 200 metre.
Officials invited an expert technical team from New Delhi which completed the repair work.
Before releasing water to MMD (Sri Rajarajeshwara Reservoir), officials started lifting water from Nandi Medaram pump house in Dharmaram mandal of Peddapalli district from Monday.
