About 50 per cent of drivers caught driving with more than the permitted level of alcohol, are youngsters aged between

21 and 30. Cyberabad police who have booked cases against the drunk drivers have expressed concern over the disregard for road safety rules among younger drivers.

Enforcement drives were held in the Cyberabad police commissionerate limits on February 7, 8 and till the early hours of February 9. Traffic police booked cases on 273 people — 50 four-wheeler drivers,

19 three-wheeler drivers, one truck driver and 203 bikers.

The police booked 59 cases at Madhapur, 53 at Kukatpally, 36 at Miyapur, 25 at Rajendranagar, 22 at Alwal, 19 each at Gachibowli and Jeedimetla, 15 each at Balanagar and Shamshabad and 10 cases were booked under the Shadnagar limits.

In an analysis by the police, it was found that about 136 persons among the total drunk drivers held were aged between 21 and 30, followed by those aged between 31 to 40 (84 persons), 30 persons aged between 41 and 50, 17 persons aged between 51 and 60, while six persons were aged between

18 and 20.

Also, 50 drunk drivers were employed as drivers, 47 persons were daily-wage labourers, 24 were IT employees, 24 were businessmen, two were bankers, three were students and security guards, one was a government servant, eight were realtors and one a farmer.

“It is sad to note that many highly educated citizens are resorting to this dangerous activity without any concern for safety. Also, it was noticed that a lot of youngsters are riding bikes dangerously in a drunken condition without a helmet and triple riding on highways. This was quite visible during the checking,” said a Cyberabad police official.

The police has appealed to parents not to encourage their children to drive without a valid driving licence and not when they have drunk alcohol.
