NRI cell registers 70 cases till date
Telangana police’s NRI cell registered 70 cases into the petitions received since its inception last July. The cell, which was formed to deal with cases where women are victimised by the NRI spouses, has managed to get six passports impounded.
On Thursday, a workshop was conducted for police officials on how such cases had to be investigated and also to review the status of cases currently under investigation with the cell.
Swati Lakra, IG (Law and Order) and incharge of Women Safety Wing, pointed out that 70 of the 73 petitions were registered. About 41 cases are pending trial and 29 are currently being probed.
In five cases, LOCs (Lookout Circular) were executed against the NRI spouses while passports of six NRI accused were impounded.
Meanwhile, in three cases where there was possibility of reconciliation/separation, the NRI cell interacted with both the parties and facilitated a legal solution, she said.
A ‘voice-over application’ was launched to inform the precautions to be taken while choosing an NRI groom and voice message on state SHE Team WhatsApp number was also launched on the occasion.
She said that the cell has maintained liaison with several stakeholders including the National Commission for Women, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, and NGOs working on NRI issues, Regional Passport Office and the state government to regularly follow up the cases.
