RTC bus rams into van, 6 killed

Bus driver was busy on his cellphone

Six persons, including a seven-year-old girl, died when the van in which they were travelling was hit by an RTC bus in Medak district on Monday. Preliminar­y investigat­ions by the police have revealed that the bus driver was busy on his mobile phone and rammed into the van as a result.

Ten others, including the bus driver, have been admitted to a government hospital in Medak for treatment. The condition of a girl undergoing treatment is stated to be serious. Bodies of those dead have been shifted to the mortuary.

According to Medak district police, at around 11 a. m. on Monday, a DCM van with 20 people belonging to Fasalwadi village was heading to the Vanadurga temple in Yedupayala village. When the van reached the outskirts of Sangaiahpe­t village, it was hit by RTC bus coming from the opposite direction.

Passersby rushed to the accident site and called an ambulance to shift the injured to the hospital for treatment. The deceased have been identified as C. Madhavi, 36, Manjula 45, G. Manemma, 55, N. Durgamma, 40, and G. Rajitha, 36, who died on the spot, while D. Madhurima, 10, succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

Bus driver Md. Shamsheer fractured his hand. “Our inquiry has revealed that the bus driver was using his mobile phone when he lost control and crashed into the van,” SI of Medal police said. The driver is yet to be questioned as he is undergoing treatment, he added.

Three killed at Narsingi

In another mishap at Narsingi village, also in Medak district, three persons were killed and two suffered injuries when the van (TS 17 C 2491) they were travelling in rammed into a stationary lorry (AP 09 TA 1611) on National

Highway 44 during the early hours of Monday.

Narsingi sub-inspector D. Rajesh said E. Krishna, 28, of Dammannape­t, P. Kista-iah, 60, and P. Anjaneyulu, 25, of Machireddy mandal, along with Kavya and Ajay, went to RGI Airport at Shamshabad in a van to drop P. Ravi, their relative, who was leaving for Dubai on Sunday night.

While returning to the village at around 3.30 a. m., their van rammed into the lorry parked at the roadside on the highway. Police said Kistaiah, Krishna and van driver Anjaneyulu died in the mishap. The injured E. Kavya and her younger brother Ajay have been shifted to Ramayampet government hospital for treatment. It is suspected the driver of the van may have felt sleepy and lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the mishap. A case has been registered. Bodies of the deceased have been handed over to their kin after autopsy, police said.
