Heavy rainfall brings down temperature, roads flooded

- DC CORRESPONDENT

Heavy rainfall and sudden hail storms caught people unawares on Thursday evening in the city. The rain brought down the maximum temperature by just one degree to 36 degrees Celsius, and several roads were flooded.

Hail fell in Tarnaka and surrounding areas. The rain was accompanied by strong winds that also caused some havoc when an advertisement hoarding near the Spanish Mosque near Parade Grounds flew off.

Already made anxious by the Coronavirus scare, people were clearly perturbed to see rainwater mixed with sewerage flooding the streets.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad, the rain was triggered by an upper air circulation that is located over

Vidarbha and is expanding to Northern Karnataka, while passing over the state. Under its influence the state is expected to witness more such showers for the next 24 hours i.e. Friday.

The IMD has also issued a heavy rainfall warning: ‘Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning very likely to occur at isolated places over Telangana,’ the warning read.

According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS), Tirumalgherry registered the highest rainfall at 4.4 cm. This was followed by West Marredpally at 3.5 cm and Uppal with 2.8 cm.

The scare over the novel coronavirus infection did not impact attendance for the Class 10 Board exams which began in the state on Thursday.

The district education officer (DEO) at Hyderabad said the 362 centres in the capital conducted the exam without any hindrance. Of the 71,219 students in Hyderabad,

722 were absent. A total of

17 flying squads inspected

98 centres. No cases of malpractice or impersonation were booked on the first day.

At many centres, students were seen wearing masks. Students were also given hand santisers before they wrote the exam. Separate seating was arranged for students with cough, fever and other symptoms. At most of the centres, students gathered after the exam and did not follow instructions such as not shaking hands or moving closely in groups.

The SSC exams will conclude on April 16. As many as 5,34,903 students have registered for the exams. In view of rising temperature, drinking water, ORS packets and other facilities are being provided at examination centres.

The Directorate of Government Examinations has established a control room with the telephone number 040-23230942. A total of

2,530 centres have been set up statewide, and nearly

30,500 teachers have been deployed as invigilators.
