Barely 24 hours before the four convicts in the Nirbhaya case were to be executed, a drama played out outside Delhi’s Patiala House court, on Thursday, as the wife of one of the four convicts threatened to kill herself.

Punita Devi, the wife of Akshay Singh, on Thursday morning, was found sitting with her child outside the court which was to hear a plea seeking a stay on the execution of the convicts. The woman appeared to have a nervous breakdown and fainted.

On March 5, a trial court had issued fresh death warrants for March 20 at 5.30 am as the date for the execution of convicts Mukesh Singh (32), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Sharma (26), and Akshay (31).

The court was on Thursday informed that no legal remedies of any of the four convicts in the case were pending in any of the courts.

Meanwhile, an altercation broke out between the relatives of the accused in the Nirbhaya case and a person who was protesting against advocate A.P. Singh outside Patiala House court.
