WALKWAYS TO SANITIZE IN 40 SECONDS DEVELOPED

- RAJIB CHOWDHURI | DC

To tackle Covid-19 pandemic, the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI), a premier Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-laboratory in Durgapur, has developed a disinfection walkway with two variants: pneumatic and hydraulic which can sanitise a person in just 40 seconds.

“The embedded sensors of the walkway ensure that the operational time of the system can be varied within a range of 20 seconds to 40 seconds,” the science and technology ministry said on Friday.

Billed to be one of the most comprehensive disinfectant delivery systems, it ensures maximum target coverage with minimum shadow area of a person and can be deployed at many locations such as isolation and quarantine facilities, mass transit system entry points, health centres and other locations with significant footfall.

With a dimension of two metres in height, 2.1 metres in length and one metre in width it has already been installed at CMERI. The hydraulic model is made of 1 hp pressurised motor high velocity pump with necessary set up nozzles to ensure optimum mist formation. National Science Centre in New Delhi, Durgapur Municipal Corporation and Ishwar Chandra High School in Durgapur want to procure it.
