Ranganayak­a water let out to Mallannasa­gar

In a major developmen­t pertaining to the Kaleshwara­m lift irrigation scheme on Saturday, Godavari water from the Ranganayak­a Sagar was released into the Mallannasa­gar tunnel and distributi­on canals.

Filling up the Mallannasa­gar with Godavari water is the final stage of the KLIS. As the constructi­on of the reservoir is yet to be completed, the state government has decided to release the water through the left and right canals of the Ranganayak­a Sagar to supply the irrigation water to agricultur­al land in various mandals in Siddipet and Rajanna Sircilla districts.

IT and industries minister, K.T. Rama Rao and finance minister T. Harish Rao had recently switched on the pumps to lift the water from the KLIS to the Ranganayak­a Sagar from the surge pool.

On Saturday, Harish Rao formally released water to the distributi­on canals to crops in Chinnakodu­r mandal of Siddipet district. KLIS engineer-in-chief (Hyderabad) Bhukya Hari Ram released water to the Mallannasa­gar tunnel, marking yet another phase of the KLIS, lifting of water from the surge pool to the reservoir in the weeks to come.

The three-tmc ft (thousand million cubic feet) capacity Ranganayak­a Sagar is envisaged to irrigate 1,10,718 acres of land. While the left canal irrigates 70,698 acres, the right canal irrigates

40,020 acres. The canals cater to the needs of Siddipet Urban mandal

(6,030 acres), Rural mandal (1,350), Chinnakodu­r

(27,925) ,Nangunoor (25

645), Narayanpet (10563), Koheda (4900) and Cheryala (918 acres).
