IMD warns of hot days ahead

- T.S.S. SIDDHARTH | DC

The Indian Meteorological Department in the city warns that some very hot days are ahead of us, with maximum temperature touching 42-43 degrees Celsius.

On Wednesday, the maximum temperature was 40.2 degrees Celsius. Within the city the highest temperature was recorded at Madhapur, where mercury levels hit 41.6 degrees Celsius. The lowest minimum temperature was recorded at Kapra at 24.9 degrees Celsius.

Some relief could be afforded by thunderstorm activity but this would be of a temporary nature as the Met office says that the showers could trigger a rise in humidity.

“The temperatures are expected to rise as we progress into the month of May. But there are chances that the heat could abate because of sudden pre-monsoon activity. However, this will only increase the moisture in the air, and the following days would be marked by uncomfortable heat,” IMD director, K Naga Ratna, told Deccan Chronicle.

Experts from the private weather forecasting agency Skymet say that there are chances of less monsoon activity this year.

“In comparison to the rest of the peninsula, Telangana may not witness widespread monsoon activity. The trough that is bringing rain is centred more towards the western side. During this time, there would be no rain over the state," said G.P. Sharma of Skymet.

He said we are at the peak of the pre-monsoon rainfall season, and it would be peppered with rains. “However, these rains would not do much to abate the heat in the city. There will be build-up of heat pockets. For the next few days we predict that the temperature will stay in the range of 40 to 43 degrees Celsius,” he said.
