- S.A. ISHAQUI I DC

Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao on Monday announced that farmers who opt for paddy varieties not prescribed by the state government will not get financial assistance under the Rythu Bandhu scheme.

Addressing a press conference after a Cabinet meeting here, Mr Rao said the state government will issue charts to the farmers before commencement of sowing ahead of the Vanakalam (Kharif) season, specifying the crops to be sown in their respective areas. The farmers should strictly adhere to the chart, he said.

The Cabinet had decided to allow cotton crop in this monsoon season on 70 lakh acres and paddy in 40 acres and red gram in 15 lakh acres, he said. Other crops like turmeric, chilli and vegetables will be permitted in the remaining area. Cultivating of maize will not be allowed during the monsoon season and it will be restricted to the Yasangi (Rabi) season.

Mr Rao said the government was expecting agriculture activity in 1.33 crore acres during the Vanakalam in view of the increase of irrigation facilities due to the completion of projects.

He said TS had become a “state of agriculture” with the decisions implemented by the TRS government and because of the soil and climactic conditions. He said that the Patancheru-based Icrisat (International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-arid Tropics) had

been established in the state only because of the unique soil mix that has black, red and loamy soil all in one area. “We also have typical weather where tropical system exists along with semi arid conditions that are suitable for several types of crops,” he said.

“Telangana state is breaking its own records as well as national records because of all these natural endowments. On the other hand Irrigation projects are nearing completion,” Mr Rao said.

The Chief Minister said that Telangana state had created a record by sending 90 lakh tonnes of paddy to teh Food Corporation of India (FCI); this had never crossed 50 lakh tonnes earlier. “This is nothing but a revolution,” he said.

Under the regulated farming initiative the state has created 2,604 clusters with 5,000 farmers each in the state with one agriculture extension officer to manage the cluster and released `350 crore for construction of Rythu Vedikas. The government has instructed the collectors to complete the construction of Rythu Vedikas, he added.
