Angry colleagues beat up top WB police officer

A senior Kolkata police officer was allegedly beaten up outside his workplace-cum-residence at the Police Training School in the city with bamboo poles by a “violent group of cops” of the same force on Tuesday night during their revolt over lack of protection gear when on Covid duty.

The injured officer, Colonel Nevendera Singh Paul, is deputy commission­er of police of combat force (Combat Batallion), heading the commandos unit and disaster management group (DMG) of the city police, on deputation from the Indian Army.

At around 10.30 pm on

Tuesday, the rebel cops, covering their faces, launched their protest carrying bamboo poles at the entrance of the PTS, housing the offices and barracks of the Combat Batallion comprising the commandos, DMG apart from training facilities, on A.J.C. Bose Road in Maidan area.

Some of them claimed being forced to stay in the barrack where four of their colleagues including an assistant sub-inspector of Combat Batallion were infected by Covid19.

They also pointed out that unavailabi­lity of masks and hand sanitisers while on duty. Others alleged of not getting enough rest due to prolong duty hours. When Col. Singh came out to pacify them, he was attacked by the rebel cops who thrashed him, preliminar­y investigat­ion revealed.

Alarmed by the unpreceden­ted attack, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accompanie­d by Kolkata police commission­er Anuj Sharma and other officers, visited the PTS on Wednesday morning. The aggrieved cops demanded Col Singh’s removal from his post alleging misbehavio­r with them.

“Leave the issue to me. Submit your problem in writing. Anuj has told me about some issues. You will not face any problem of funds. You will get what you want. I will come here again to talk to you,” she told them.
