- DC CORRESPONDENT

A record spike of 5,611 fresh cases, with 140 deaths, was reported across India in the past 24 hours, as the total number of coronavirus cases rose to 1,06,750 cases and the toll climbed to 3,303, the Union health ministry reported on Wednesday.

The number of active Covid19 cases was 61,149, while

42,297 people recovered, with

3,124 discharged in the last 24 hours, the ministry said, noting that 39.62 per cent patients had recovered so far.

Health ministry officials said the recovery rate had gradually improved from 7.1 per cent, when the lockdown started, to

39.62 per cent now, as almost 40 per cent of those detected with

Covid-19 had recovered. Among those who recovered in the last 24 hours is a fourmonth-old girl from Bhopal. The girl and her father, who works as a nurse at Bhopal’s AIIMS, and another sevenyear-old girl were discharged on Tuesday.

Officials said of the total number of active cases, only

6.39 per cent needed hospital support. Of them, about 2.9 per cent required oxygen support, three per cent need ICU support and 0.45 per cent ventilator support.

The government allowed home isolation for pre-symptomatic, mild and moderate cases, as patients with no fever for 10 days will not spread the infection.

Till now, the ICMR has done

25.36 lakh tests. On Tuesday, for the second time, over one lakh tests were done in a span of 24 hours.

As the government slowly opens up economic activities and allows inter-state movement of people, the Indian Railways said passenger train operations would intensify from June 1 with about 200 non-AC trains. These will be in addition to the Shramik Specials and other long-distance special trains running now. Two intra-state trains will run in Karnataka from Friday — Bengaluru-Mysuru and Bengaluru-Belagavi. The Railways also allowed the opening of food stalls and vending units selling books, medicines and other items at stations. Food courts can also open, but only for takeaway.
