Police training gets a Mohd Rafi touch

- DURGA PRASAD SUNKU | DC

Training to be a police officer is never a song and dance affair. But for recruits of the 10th Battalion of the Telangana State Special Protection Force, their daily physical drills have been enlivened by trainer, Mohammad Rafi, an assistant sub-inspector, who has made the Bollywood cult song Dhal gaya din, ho gayi shaam a part of their marching drill.

A video of Rafi putting his wards through the paces and posted on Twitter by a senior IPS officer on Sunday had an instant 1,700 likes and was re-tweeted hundreds of times. Quite ironically the original duet is cosung by the legendary Mohammad Rafi.

The 41-year-old Rafi told Deccan Chronicle that he intended to bring the recruits out of their homesickness and physical duress.

“I have noticed these shortcomings since 2007 when I began training new recruits, whose day starts at 4.30 am and goes on till 8 pm. My mechanism that also includes rendition of some patriotic numbers helps them get relief from the monotony,” he said.

Rafi explained, “Lyrical additions are meant to instill a nationalistic spirit among them. I want them to feel responsible for the people and the country.”

Rafi joined the force as a constable in 1998 and was promoted to head constable in 2006 and assistant sub-inspector in 2018.

“It is in my blood. My grandfather was a policeman during British Raj while my father was a civil constable,” he says on what drew him to the uniform.
