CBSE cancels Board exams, option for Class 12 confuses

- HARLEEN MINOCHA | DC

The remaining CBSE and the ICSE examinations for classes X and XII have been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Supreme Court was informed on Thursday.

Class XII students of CBSE will have the option of taking the exams later or move ahead with the assessment based on their performance in the last exams.

This option has created confusion among students and parents, as the degree admissions are scheduled to begin and centres like Delhi see very keen competition with the cut-off at more than 99 per cent.

Class XII students are unsure about their plans. "My daughter Saaliha, a science stream student, has taken all her exams. With this decision, there is a sense of unrest because colleges have started admissions and we don’t know how to go forward,” said Serrin, mother of a student of Glendale Academy International, Hyderabad.

The option on conducting the exams later, has put the students in a spot. They are not sure if they have to rely on their marks secured so far, or attempt the exam again in light of the competition.

There has been no clarification on conducting the exam again from the board. Officials from the CBSE said the matter is sub-judice and that they are awaiting court orders.

“What we are doing is trying to calm the students and parents by assuring them that the students with pending exams will be accommodated as and when we receive a notification. But the confusion and panic remain,” said Minu Salooja, associate director, Glendale Academy.

Tiya, student of Class XII in St. Joseph’s Convent in Chandigarh, said she was preparing for her Business Studies exam. “I am unsure how I feel about this. There is a lot of confusion. With the conditions outside, it is good that the board took this decision, but what will be the future course of action is something we need to understand,” said Tiya.

In Jaipur, Naveen Sharma said that his daughter was looking forward to her pending exam in the commerce stream but now it seems she won’t be able to take the exam.
