TRS readies for GHMC polls under KTR in Dec.

Minister focuses on infra development in city

- S.A. ISHAQUI | DC

Despite the Covid-19 crisis appearing as an obstacle for holding elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, which are expected before January 2021, the TRS is setting the ground for the polls.

Minister K.T. Rama Rao who had led the party to victory in the GHMC elections in 2016, is said to have taken up the job this time too.

For the last two months, Rama Rao has been concentrating on the city, launching development schemes and projects costing hundreds of crores.

The minister on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the elevated corridor from the Government Printing Press in Chanchalguda to Yadagiri theatre. The project, taken up under the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP), costs `523.37 crore.

Earlier he had laid the foundation for the construction of a four-lane elevated corridor from Indira Park to VST and a second level three-lane bidirectional flyover from Ramnagar to Baghlingampally.

In June, Rama Rao inaugurated the four corridors constructed by the Hyderabad Road Development Corporation Limited (HRDCL) at a cost of `33.80 crore to ease traffic congestion.

These include the 2.7-km road from Serlingampally zonal office to NH 65 via Manjeera Pipeline Road, the link road of 1 km from HT line to Miyapur road in Kukatpally zone, the

0.47-km stretch from Road

No.70, Jubilee Hills (Prashasannagar) to Narne Road No. 78 in Khairthabad zone and the road from Neknampur to Osmansagar via Alkapur Township covering 0.46 km in Manikonda Municipality.

The Musi Riverfront Corporation has commenced the survey for the beautification of the Musi river which will give a facelift to the Old City.

TRS sources said that Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao was keen in holding the GHMC elections as per schedule. He is awaiting the decision of the Election Commission with regard to the Bihar Assembly elections, due in OctoberNovember.

If the EC holds the elections despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the TRS will further intensify its focus on the GHMC for the polls.

Sources said out that with a view to attracting the attention of voters, the government had introduced the city-centric budget in February this year by allocating `10,000 crore for development work in the GHMC limits.

Senior TRS leaders said in private that the CM will lay the responsibility of the GHMC elections on Rama Rao's shoulders, keeping in mind his performance during the 2016 elections. Of the 150 divisions in the GHMC, the TRS in 2016 won 99 seats, followed by the MIM (44), BJP (four), Congress (two) and TD (one).

It was the first time that any party had bagged 99 seats since the GHMC was formed in 2008. In 2009, the Congress, then the ruling party, won 52, MIM 43, TD 35 and the BJP five.

The party leaders felt that Rama Rao was focusing on Hyderabad to show that the TRS was the only option for the residents to make Hyderabad a world-class city, and that the Covid-19 pandemic was not a constraint for it to carry on development activities.

Apart from launching new projects in the GHMC, Rama Rao has frequently held meetings with officials of the GHMC and SRDP, HRDCL and the HMDA to review the progress of ongoing projects.

Government sources said that the term of the GHMC will end in February, and elections may be held in the end of December or in mid-January.
