- DC CORRESPONDENT

After two days of marginally fewer cases, there was a surge in Coronavirus infections on Thursday as 45,720 new cases were registered in a single day. This was the biggest detection of new cases in a single day and figures indicate an alarming situation in the country. However,

covid 19 india.org put the total number of cases at 12,85,236.

The deaths too were on an all-time high on a single day as 1,129 fresh fatalities were recorded across India.

The overall number of cases in India is now

12,38,635 and the toll is

29,861, according to the union health ministry.

At the same time, the recovery rate improved to 63.18 per cent as

29,861 persons got discharged from medical supervision in the last

24 hours. The total number of recovered persons is now 7,82,607 while 4,26,167 remain under treatment.

The high number of fresh cases has come from Maharashtra

(10,576) and the southern states Tamil Nadu

(5,849), Karnataka

(4,764), Telangana

(1,554), Andhra Pradesh

(6,045). Uttar Pradesh

(2,300), Bihar (1,417), West Bengal (2,291), Assam (1,390) too were big contributors to the day’s spike.

In fact, three states – Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu – together have 50 per cent of all active cases at present. As per health economist Rijo M. John, Kerala is witnessing a second wave and 74% of all its new infections are through local transmission.

“In 65 cases source of infection is unknown. Kerala’s daily tests positive rate has increased to 4.9% warranting more tests,” Rijo M. John said.

It is also now clear that the virus is now moving from bigger states towards the smaller states and Union territories like Nagaland, Daman and Diu, Goa, Tripura, Manipur, Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh and Puducherry as several fresh infections are being reported from these areas on a daily basis.

As far as deaths are concerned, Tamil Nadu had the highest number of deaths in one day –

518 – followed by Maharashtra (280).
