Doctors oppose hiring on one-year contracts

Specialists want permanent appointments to be made

Eighty five specialists are being appointed for Gandhi Hospital and Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences on contract basis by the Director of Health and Medical Education, raising a concern on why recruitments are on contract basis.

The one-year contract is being objected to by doctors who state that permanent appointments must be made. Due to Covid-19, there is speculation that few doctors will apply as there is risk of contracting the infection.

The announcement for permanent posts was expected during the pandemic. The announcement that the recruitment will be on contract basis has angered doctors, who feel that temporarily contracted doctors will not ease the situation.

There are major challenges in absorption to permanent posts after working on contract basis and for that reason many doctors are not willing.

Healthcare Reforms Association president Dr Mahesh Kumar explained, “We want permanent recruitment of specialists as they are not required only for cities but also for the districts. There is a dearth of specialists in districts and that too has to be filled up.”

Doctors have been waiting for the recruitment process in the government set-up as there are vacant posts of specialists due to the retirement of senior doctors.

There are an estimated 500 sanctioned posts and most of them are vacant due to lack of recruitment.

With the new hospital having come up in Gachibowli, it has now become important to make it fully functional and that will require specialists.
