Charu is CRPF IG in Srinagar; a first for women IPS

- VIKRAM SHARMA | DC

As gunshots continue to shatter the peace, the Centre, for the first time, has posted a woman IPS officer to take on militants operating in the Kashmir Valley, which remains tense a year after abrogation of Article 370.

Charu Sinha, a 1996 batch IPS officer from the Telangana cadre, has been posted as inspector general of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Srinagar sector.

Though Kiran Bedi, India’s first woman IPS officer and present Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, was posted to the Srinagar sector in the early 1990s, when militancy was at its peak, she did not take up the assignment, reportedly due to personal reasons.A delighted Charu Sinha told Deccan Chronicle over the phone, “I would be taking charge in the next one week or 10 days.” Asked for a comment on the challenges she would be facing in the post-Article 370 scenario, she chose not to comment. “Once I take charge, I will be in a better position to speak,” she said.

Known to be a no-nonsense officer, Charu Sinha has previously worked in Rayalaseema in Andhra Pradesh, when faction feuds were at an all-time high. A graduate in English literature, history and political science, the IPS officer also worked as officer on special duty (OSD) in Medak district where she was incharge of anti-extremist operations and as SP of Nizamabad and Chittoor districts. She also served as DIG, Anantapur range, besides working as SP in the Intelligence Security Wing (ISW).

As Director of AntiCorruption Bureau (ACB), she was abruptly transferred by the K.

It was later learnt that the upright police officer had ruffled quite a few feathers within the TRS as she went about cracking the whip on corrupt officials even as there were speculations that her transfer was in connection with the cashfor-votes scam involving TD supremo N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Thereafter, she left for central deputation and joined the CRPF. During her tenure as IGP, Training, she incorporated the Israeli military self-defence technique Krav Maga for police constables in their respective units across the state.
