CM to open cable bridge by Sept. 15
Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao will inaugurate the cablestayed Durgam Cheruvu bridge, which has already garnered wide attention. The bridge will be opened to the public by September 15. Only minor electrical works remain to be completed on the structure.
According to GHMC officials, the inaugural was delayed because the electrical material had to be brought in from New Delhi. The material would reach the city by Saturday afternoon and work would resume 24/7. About 98 per cent of the construction work has been completed.
The bridge will be inaugurated upon getting the CM’s appointment, which could even be prior to the Legislative Assembly session beginning September 7. However, it would be opened to the public only by the middle of the month.
It is stated that the Durgam Cheruvu bridge will be the world’s longestspan extradosed cablestayed bridge at 233.8 metres, once inaugurated.
Traffic will not be allowed on Saturdays and Sundays and public holidays, and the bridge would be opened to tourists on those days.
The bridge would offer a 2 km shorter route between Jubilee Hills Road No 45 and Mindspace and Gachibowli. It will provide a traffic conduit between Hitec City, Mindspace and Gachibowli to other parts of the core city.
It is expected to will relieve congestion on Jubilee Hills Road No. 36 and Madhapur road. This road which has a number of sharp curves and causes frequent accidents.
The cables being used for the bridge have been tested in a lab in Germany for fatigue and have received approval. Generally, fatigue tests are done to determine the behaviour of the materials under different conditions. The idea was to ensure safety and security of the structure with high precision.
The use of extradosed technology helped in reducing the pylon height from 75 metres to 57. This ensures that the structure does not dominate the local ambience.
