Sonam Nair says ‘Action’

- LIPIKA VARMA

With the webseries Masaba Masaba receiving critical appreciation and audiences’ love, director and writer Sonam Nair is back into prominence. Masaba Masaba tries to portray the story of a mother daughter duo, adding to it a fictitious tweak.

Before this, Sonam had directed Kafir, another much- a c c l a i med web-series starring Dia Mirza. Sonam, who directed the teen film Gippi in 2013 and the short film Khujli in 2017, was also an assistant director for blockbusters Wake Up Sid and Saath Khoon Maaf.

Sonam is currently busy penning a few scripts, “Whether they’ll develop into comedies or emotional dramas, I can reveal only after I have completed writing them,” she says. But when we remind her that her audiences have high hopes from her, she relents. “I am hoping to write and direct an action film. But I know I’ll have to work hard for this one,” she says excitedly.

So does Rohit Shetty have tough competition? Sonam says, “No tough competition to anyone. I wish to do my work my way and bring difference in my action film — something that’s not been seen before. The script will have action and loads of emotions from a woman’s perspective.”

Then, the script will be a story based on a woman, right? This once, Sonam refuses to budge. She simply says, “Please don’t pressure me into answering all these questions.”

Sonam, an accidental entrant into Bollywood, had studied in the US. So will her writing and directing sensibilities lean towards Hollywood? “I portray Indian sensibilities to the best of my abilities in my story telling. But a little influence might show given that I studied abroad,” she says.
