The third with a four-in-four

Indian-born scientist and captain of Germany’s women’s cricket team matches Malinga and Rashid Khan’s record

Anuradha Doddaballapur, Indian-born cardiovascular scientist, is captain of the Germany’s women’s cricket team. And Anuradha is in the company of Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga and Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, for all three have the distinction of grabbing four wickets in four consecutive balls in international cricket.

Incidentally, Anuradha also has the distinction of being the first bowler to pick four wickets in four consecutive balls in women’s T20Is.

“It feels great to know that only Malinga and Rashid Khan have got four in four balls before me,” says the Germany women’s cricket team captain, who also tells us that it was only at the end of the day she realised the feat.

“It was only when the team had come back to the pavilion and we began checking our phones just before wrapping up that we

realised it.”Anuradha describes.

SCIENTIFICALLY SPEAKING…

Anuradha had reached Germany in 2011 for her PhD and graduated in 2015, amidst which she even made her debut for the German team in 2013. However, the record-holding cricketer confesses that combining cricket and the biomedical research work has never been easy for her. “It’s pretty much like juggling two careers. However, though it is fairly stressful sometimes, I quite enjoy it,” she adds. Originally f r o m Karnataka, Anuradha achieved her record in August while p l ay in g against Austria in Seebarn. Interestingly, Anuradha, like Malinga, is a right-arm fast bowler, but she set her record when she decided to bowl as a spinner.

The cricketer is also a big fan of Malinga. “He’s a great bowler and has won many matches for Sri Lanka. It would just be a great feeling to meet him if there’s a chance,” she says.
