MAHA BUILDING COLLAPSE TOLL INCREASES TO 40
The death toll in the building collapse in Bhiwandi in Maharashtra’s Thane district increased to 40 on Wednesday with the recovery of 14 more bodies overnight. Twenty-five persons have been pulled out of the debris alive so far and are being treated at hospitals in Bhiwandi and Thane, an official said.
The search operation continued throughout the night despite heavy rains. The bodies recovered from the debris were mutilated and highly decomposed as they had remained there for over 50 hours, the official said.
Even at the time of writing this news more people were feared trapped. Due to heavy rains rescue teams were facing difficulties in rescue operation however they continued rescue operation throughout night. According to NDRF and Thane Municipal Corporation’s disaster management cell, the rescue operation will continue as more people are feared trapped under the debris.
Of the 40 bodies recovered so far, 18 were children.
