Breath-taking heirloom jewellery and timepieces go under the hammer at AstaGuru’s online auction

- RESHMI CHAKRAVORTY DECCAN CHRONICLE

India is known for its obsession with gold and jewellery. Most of us grew up watching our mothers, aunts and grandmothers decking up in exquisite jewellery for every family occasion. Much of this jewellery is passed on from one generation to another as heirlooms, and many young girls dream of the day when they will get to wear the stunning ornaments. Celebrating the sentiment of bonds and relationships, AstaGuru, an online auction house,is holding its annual sale of Heirloom Jewellery, Fine Silver and Exceptional Timepieces.

The auction will feature over 100 lots comprising a curated selection of vintage Indian and European jewellery which define the virtuosity of design and craftsmanship. Interestingly, the auction will also feature a collection of 54 timepieces and clocks from some of the most sought-after luxury brands, such as Patek Phillipe, Vacheron Constantin and Richard Mille.

A COLLECTOR’S PARADISE

Jay Sagar, Specialist, AstaGuru, says, “India has a long-standing, and profoundly fascinating history with jewellery that goes back centuries. The craft of jewellery-making has been passed down from one generation to the next. Jewellery pieces like the Maang Tikka and Baju bands

have played an essential role in religious ceremonies, and people feel more of a personal connection to jewellery in India.”

Jay feels the demand for rare heirloom jewellery, silver and unique timepieces in India are on par with the international market. This auction serves as a way to celebrate the rich legacy of Indian craftsmanship along with an appreciation for European jewellery.

“When it comes to timepieces, there has been a growing interest amongst clients to build up an enviable collection, since watches are the ultimate symbol of luxury and status. The auction of heirloom jewellery and timepieces exists because there is a burgeoning market for it,” he adds.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, Jay feels the auction will strike the right chord because of the importance of the collection. “Seasoned collectors will appreciate the historical significance of the lots and the curation. One cannot deny the attraction of precious gemstones and one-of-a-kind luxury watches hedged with the stable investment position,” explains Jay.

PROTECTING A LEGACY

A few of the exhibits, which are more than 100 years old, come under the National Treasure Act. Articles classified as ‘National Treasure’ cannot be exported. “We have 17 items in this auction that are classified as ‘National Treasures’. To source items with such incredible history requires a lot of research and dedication, and all the credit for it goes to the specialists’ team,” says Jay.

“Each piece unique, so my advice would be to look for that personal connection,” he tells those interested in investing in heirlooms. “Always invest in the lot that draws your attention and speaks to you the most. Appreciating the craftsmanship of the lot is an important validating point.” is
