Eluru: The mysterious illness continued to spread

to nearly 450 on Monday.

Mysterious illness continued to spread panic in Eluru in West Godavari district, with the number of cases increasing to nearly 450 on Monday. Out of this, 263 patients were discharged after recovery, while 171 are being treated at local government hospitals. Seventeen critically-ill patients were sent to Vijayawada for better medical care.

A constable — P. Kiran Kumar of Eluru Three town — who was on duty during the Chief Minister’s visit to the city has suddenly collapsed on the road and gone unconsciou­s with fits. He was immediatel­y shifted to a hospital. Another employee of the irrigation department has suddenly fallen sick while sitting on his chair in his office. A driver of an ambulance belonging to a government hospital fell ill with the same symptoms. The mysterious disease has caught the attention of national and internatio­nal medical experts. A team of experts from the All India Institute of Medical and Sciences (AIIMS) came to the hospital and took samples from five patients. Expert teams from Pune-based National Institute of Virology and Hyderabad-based Indian Institute of Chemical Laboratory and National Institute of Nutrition are also coming to Eluru to find out about the disease through their experiment­s. An expert team from the WHO will also come to Eluru.
