Balu, who came home drunk, asked his son to get beedis for him. When he returned late, Balu attacked him. He then poured a can of turpentine oil on him and lit it, using the same matchstick which he used to light his beedi. Charan ran for help and fell in a ditch after which his mother and neighbours put off the fire and took him to hospital.

KPHB police had initially registered a case under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC, which would now be altered as 302 (murder).
