A 10-MEMBER CBI team including two legal officers and a female officer among others reached the same address within five minutes.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday morning her MP nephew Abhishek Banerjee and his family apparently to boost their confidence minutes before the Central Bureau of Investigation reached their palatial residence in South Kolkata and questioned Abhishek’s wife Rujira Banerjee Narula for her suspected link to overseas financial transactions in the coal smuggling case.

At around 11.30 am, a worried Trinamul Congress supremo, on her way to the state secretariat Nabanna in a convoy from her Harish Chatterjee Street residence in the vicinity, dropped at Shantiniketan on 188A Harish Mukherjee Road, which was already turned by the Kolkata Police personnel into a fortress, after learning that a CBI team would arrive at the same address anytime to quiz Narula.

Walking into the multistoreyed apartment, Banerjee paid a surprise visit to Abhishek, his wife and others and also spoke to them. In less than ten minutes, she however walked out of the building with Abhishek’s little daughter. Boarding her car, the CM left for Nabanna while her grand niece was taken inside.

A 10-member CBI team including two legal officers and a female officer among others from the anti corruption branch reached the same address within five minutes. They grilled Narula over the next one hour and a half about her link to Anup Majhi alias Lala, the absconding kingpin of the coal smuggling case, who allegedly used to deposit around `36 lakh monthly to the Kasikorn Bank account at Bangkok in Thailand and another bank in London, according to sources.

The CBI also wanted to know from her about her job profile, foreign tours and it’s purpose, details of her bank accounts, whether she holds more than one passport and it’s purpose and if she is associated with any registered company, sources claimed. After recording Narula’s statement, the CBI investigators left.

In the afternoon sources close to the CM nephew claimed, “all questions were replied. All sort of cooperation was extended. The questioning session completed smoothly.”

Slamming the CM for her visit to her nephew’s house ahead of CBI’s arrival, BJP spokesperson Shameek Bhattacharya claimed, “Common people understand it well that the CBI does not enter someone’s residence to unleash political vendetta. In such a situation, the CM’s presence is unexpected. It was an attempt to create a mental pressure on the CBI. Had she refrained from paying the visit, it would have been better for her as the CM.”

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, however, alleged that the BJP has been trying to politicise the issue. “Abhishek has been on the forefront boldly. First he himself tweeted the CBI notice to his wife. Now Rujira also cooperated with the CBI. However, there are many others with allegations of corruption against them who are in the BJP. Still no action is taken against them. Rather those who are out of BJP, are being targeted unnecessarily,” he said.

Kathmandu, Feb. 23: Nepal's Supreme Court on Tuesday reinstated the dissolved House of Representatives, in a major setback to embattled Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli who was preparing for snap polls amidst a tussle for power with his rivals in the ruling communist party. In a landmark ruling, a five-member Constitutional bench led by Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher annulled the Oli government's "unconstitutional" decision to dissolve the 275-member lower house of Parliament. The court also ordered the government to summon the House session within the next 13 days. Nepal plunged into a political crisis on December 20 after President Bidya Dev Bhandari dissolved the House.
