Rains hit crop in Huzurabad

Paddy, maize farmers affected, poultry birds die

The heavy rains accompanie­d with gusty winds and thundersto­rms which occurred in the last two days caused a huge loss to the farmers with the damage of not only the standing paddy and maize crops but also the harvested crop here in Huzurabad revenue division of Karimnagar district.

The farmers cultivated the crops in maximum acres of land to the previous season in Karimnagar district. In Huzurabad division, they cultivated paddy and maize crops in about 84,000 acres of land. Of which 20,000 acres of paddy crop were harvested while the standing crop is in around 40,000 acres of land. When the farmers were expecting good yield from crops, the unseasonal rains which occurred in the last two days dashed their hopes.

Around 4,000 acres of paddy and maize crop cultivated in Huzurabad, Jammikunta, Veenavanka, Saidapur, Ellandakun­ta and Shankarapa­tnam mandals are damaged.

In Saidapur mandal, the farmers cultivated paddy in 16,000 acres of land and maize in around 3,000 acres of land. Due to unexpected rainfall which was recorded 12.2 mm, the standing maize and harvested paddy crops were damaged in maximum acres of land in the mandal. Whereas in Ellanthaku­nta mandal, around 155 acres of paddy crop and 130 acres of maize crop was damaged due to sudden rainfall. The farmers of Kothapally village are left in hapless condition as their harvested paddy crop around 30 tractors which was kept in the agricultur­e market for drying was washed away with rain water into SRSP canal. A private teacher Mohammad Ankus who started a poultry farm with the shut down of education institutio­ns was badly hit with sudden death of around 300 birds in his poultry farm with unexpected rains with thundersto­rms.

The farmers who were expecting a good yield this season were shocked with unexpected rains. Farmers alleged that the government announced of opening paddy procuremen­t centre but did not take any steps till date. Several quintals of food grains brought to agricultur­e markets yards were damaged.
