MP MINISTER STIRS ROW, SAYS ‘PEOPLE GET OLD, THEY MUST DIE’

- RABINDRA NATH CHOUDHUY | DC

An ‘uncharitable’ comment by a minister in Shivraj government on spiraling Covid-19 deaths in Madhya Pradesh has sparked a huge row here with Opposition Congress calling it ‘shockingly insensitive’.

State animal husbandry minister Prem Singh Patel while seeking to downplay the sudden spurt in fatalities due to Coronavirus infections in MP, said “people get old, they have to die”.

He was speaking to reporters in Barwani in MP late on Thursday.

“Deaths are occurring. Nobody can stop death. People get old, they have to die”, Patel said.

The minister’s comment comes at a time when the situation has worsened in the state with hospitals running out of beds for patients and mortuaries and crematories overflowing with bodies of the Covid-19 victims.
