Poll notice for 7 civic bodies shocks Oppn

- L. VENKAT RAM REDDY I DC

The TRS is far ahead of its rivals both in terms of campaigning and announcement of candidates for the upcoming elections to the municipal corporations of Warangal and Khammam and five municipalitie — Siddipet, Jadcherla, Kothur, Atchampet and Nakrekal — on April 30.

While the TRS has finalised its candidates and released on Friday the first list for these elections, the Opposition parties are struggling to identify its candidates to take on the TRS. This is due to the sudden release of election notifications, which meant they did not get adequate time to plan things.

is Sunday, April 18. With just two days left, the Opposition parties are running helter skelter. The TRS, well-prepared, is confident of making a clean sweep in the municipal polls yet again as it had done in the 2019 civic polls.

The Telangana State Election Commission issuing the election notification along with the poll schedule on Thursday virtually shocked the Opposition parties. The list of reserved wards was also released alongside.

In this too, the Opposition was caught unawares. They had no clue as to which ward was reserved for which category.

The sudden issue of the poll notification reminded the Opposition parties of the GHMC poll notification in November 2018 when just three days' time was given for filing of nominations against the usual one week, and just a day's time was given for the withdrawal of nomination against the usual three days.

Opposition parties say the TRS has exploited the advantage of being the ruling party yet again as it could secure all the details on the reservations in advance from the SEC and it could thus take time and pick the right candidates in advance. It also started campaigning a month in advance.

TRS working president K.T. Rama Rao is the minister for municipal administration and urban development, as also IT. He toured all the poll-bound municipalities from April 2 to April 14, launched development programmes worth crores of rupees and sought votes based on them.

Interestingly, the SEC released the schedule on April 15, a day after Rama Rao completed his tour of all the municipalities.
