Seniors turn Good Samaritans

- DC CORRESPONDENT

Age is just a number. Proving this, a group of senior citizens in Malkajgiri area is helping people of lesser Gods to get vaccinated while others of their ilk are trying to get help for themselves for inoculation.

When these people approached Asha, who runs a makeshift jowar roti counter, with an offer to get her vaccinated, she was not sure what all that meant. But, she, just as Bhagyamma, who works as a maid at some homes in the area, is among several underprivileged women who got vaccinated against the Coronavirus, thanks to the efforts of these senior citizens.

They have taken upon themselves the responsibility of getting the people without access to the vaccination process inoculated, by way of booking slots, and finding where they can get their vaccine shots. In the process, these good Samaritans are not only educating the less privileged about the vaccination process, but also about the disease. For those who do not have their own transport, this group of volunteers has also been providing transport to vaccination centres and back. They also provide dry rations to a few, since they began these activities this April.

The Good Samaritans take up the responsibility to wipe out Coronavirus when others are debating on the potency and side effects of the vaccine.

Geeta Dendukuri, a senior citizen of Kundanbagh, Begumpet, along with a few residents in the area, has taken up the task of helping maids in that locality and those who work in unorganised sectors.

“A thought occurred to me, how these people will be able to book online slots for vaccination. So, we wanted to help them out. We registered a few of them and made sure that they got the vaccine shot.”

General secretary of a residential welfare committee at Malkajgiri, B T Srinivasan, said, “Some of us may be comfortably living in our apartments or houses but there are so many people out there who may not even know about Covid vaccine and whom to approach for getting vaccinated. As we are more privileged than them, we came forward to help them out.”

He added, “Till now this helping group has been able to get close to 100 people vaccinated. However, for more than a week, the web site is not responding.”

Srinivasan also requested the other citizens, to come forward and help such people around them to learn about Covid vaccination status and guide them to get vaccinated.”

Sai Priya, an interior designer by profession, is also busy helping underprivileged people with dry groceries as well as arranging transportation for them to get the jab.
