A life devoted to destitutes
The second wave of Covid-19 has literally shaken the country, with the virus causing more deaths, more miseries and more melancholies. While only a few privileged lots enjoy the comforts they need in times of pandemic, the larger section of society, particularly the poor and the downtrodden, do not have any takers.
Overwhelmed by the plight of over 20,000 slum-dwellers at Rasoolpura in Begumpet, a local resident Nayeem Pasha has decided to do his mite by supplying them essentials and medicines to help them overcome the nemesis.
Pasha, who is the founder secretary of Kriya Sangh Society, started distributing these to those in need. Speaking to this newspaper, Pasha said, “We are going from house to house in the slum, and are supporting them by giving them the required material. We have distributed food grains, medicines and other materials they require. We began this drive roughly a month ago.”
The Sangh has a team of volunteers who go around the slum and identify those people affected with Covid-19 or are in the high-risk group. For stocks of grains and medicines, they have tied up with other organisations, which assist in mobilising resources for distribution. “There are 70-80 volunteers going out every day to deliver food and medicines to those who require them. Our volunteers go out and supply medicines and arrange for telephonic consultation with medical practitioners, so that the people do not face a dearth of medical attention,” he said. There are people who have chronic diseases, some of them are suffering from unknown diseases in the slum. Pasha said, “Many people living in the slum are daily-wage earners, some of whom have lost their livelihoods due to the pandemic. In a bid to help them sustain their lives, we are helping them out,” he added.
