- DC CORRESPONDENT

A Kashmiri youth snatched the service rifle of a policeman and then shot him with it during his interrogation at a camp of the J&K police’s counterinsurgency Special Operations Group (SOG) in Tral area of southern Pulwama district on Wednesday.

The senior police officials who are on the spot to monitor the situation “closely and cautiously” have called the mother and other family members of the youth to supplement their effort towards persuading him to surrender, the latest reports from Tral said.

The youth identified as Muhammad Amin is reported to have taken shelter in the power-generator room within the premises. He fired a few rounds from inside the room without causing any damage, a police officer said.

The police sources said that Amin was detained by the police for questioning over his alleged links with militants.

“While being interrogated, he snatched the service weapon of policeman Amjid Ahmad, injuring him,” the sources said.

IGP Kashmir, Vijay Kumar while confirming it told local news agency GNS, “One suspect during questioning snatched the weapon of one policeman and fired upon in which one constable was injured. SSP Awantipora is trying to make him surrender. No other policemen were inside the room and there was no hostage situation.”

The sources said that Amin’s brother was allegedly a militant who was killed by the security forces during a gunfight in 2019.
