Amid fewer cases, high mortality rate a worry

- DC CORRESPONDENT

New cases of Covid-19 are on the decline but the mortality rate is still at double digit numbers every day. The reason for the deaths is said to be complications due to pneumonia and thromboembolism.

Doctors treating Covid19 patients say that often they are not sure whether to tell the attendants that patients are recovering as they are fine in the morning and by evening some of them collapse.

It is an everyday feature in intensive care units and oxygen wards where the conditions of patients on the road to recovery suddenly deteriorates, leading to a lot of stress among the medical fraternity too.

A senior doctor at the King Koti Hospital explained, “We are seeing less mild cases but the serious cases which lead to aggressive treatment and fatality are still there. Till these serious cases come down, challenges will remain.”

Increase in cases in May is due to 90 per cent spread of Delta variant B.1.617.2, according to the database gathered by GISAID. The genome sequencing is carried out at community level and also at the airport level which in April had 50 percent cases at community level and 8 per cent cases at airport level. In the month of May, it was 90 per cent at the community level and

11 per cent at the airport level. The Delta variant is highly infectious and this is the prime reason for families being infected although the infection duration is shorter.
